Speaking up to elected officials and candidates is one way you can use your voice to help make change. This template and tips below it offer guidance to get your outreach started.

Dear [formal title of elected official],

Introductory paragraph: introduce yourself as a constituent and tell them why you are writing to them (i.e. a specific issue or policy)

Body paragraph(s): outline why this issue is important to you. Share personal stories or anecdotes. Explain how the issue impacts you or your community. If you have it, use data to support your claims.

Conclusion: reiterate how your request would positively impact you or your community. Thank them for their time and consideration. Politely note that you look forward to hearing from them. Make sure to include your contact information (email and phone number) so that they have a way to get in touch with you. 

Tips

  • Try to keep your letter to one page in length

  • You can send your letter via email or snail mail

  • Write to the elected official that represents your constituency at the level of government that makes decisions about the issue you are writing about or the minister responsible for a particular issue

  • If you are writing to more than one elected official write separate personalized letters to each

  • Always maintain a polite and respectful tone

  • Share why this issue matters to you – be passionate!
