Be the Change London 2022

Change can’t wait any longer.

And we all play a role in making it happen.

Over the past three years the social atmospheres in London and Middlesex, as well as across the country, have shifted dramatically. Be it COVID-19 perpetuating issues like unemployment and the lack of affordable housing, hyper-visual acts of racial violence, or the ongoing discovery of thousands of unmarked graves at former residential school sites across the country – tides are shifting, and people are becoming ever-increasingly engaged.

Issues that were previously being discussed around the margins are now at the forefront. Countless people have been inspired with a passionate drive to create change. By listening and learning, a strengthened awareness has developed.

But we know change requires so much more than just listening and learning.

Change requires action.

Though the importance of listening and learning cannot be understated, meaningful, systemic change can only occur by coming together to participate in collective action.

That’s why at LCF, we’re using the Vital Signs platform to help guide changemaking. It can be challenging to know where to start when first taking action, and we want to make it simpler. Guided by critical data in seven key issue areas and our ongoing commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this Vital Signs report centres a series of simple, accessible actions that can be taken anytime, while suggesting other organizations and causes across our community where further action can be continued.

We encourage you to explore, use the resources, share them with those around you, and take action. Because together, we will create change.

Environment

“A healthy environment is integral for a thriving community and the future generations are depending on us to protect it. A green, sustainable and just community is within our reach and must be prioritized to ensure a decent quality of life for our children.”

Affordable Housing

“Healthy communities need to begin with everyone having a safe place to call home. When people have that, so much more becomes possible.”

- Sister Joan Atkinson, London Affordable Housing Foundation

Racial Equality

“When the entire system is built on racism, it takes the conscious and consistent work of an entire community to change it. The time for that work is now.”

Gender Equality

“We all know someone who is or has experienced gender-based violence, whether that is apparent to us or not. There are far too many survivors and we each have a role in making sure that the violence stops.”

Education

“Education isn’t neutral and education systems weren’t designed to be equitable. Educators need to seek out and remove barriers that prevent students from reaching their full potential.”
